Heat, heart & a whole lot of Pickleball!!

We’re still buzzing from what was an unforgettable weekend at the Ulster Open 2025 – and not just because of the sweltering heat inside the main hall. As organiser, I had the incredible honour (and logistical challenge) of overseeing this amazing event – and I can genuinely say: I loved every minute of it. Thankfully, I wasn’t alone…

This was a true family affair. My wife was everywhere at once, from player registration to emergency snacks and everything in between. My two kids, Alfie & Maisie got stuck in too, managing merch, collecting balls and generally keeping the adults in line. They didn’t just help – they thrived, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.

Sweat, Smashes & Smiles

Let’s talk about that atmosphere. From the moment the first paddle hit the ball on Saturday morning to the final medal photo on Sunday evening, there was an electric buzz. The South Lakes Leisure Centre gave us a superb venue (yes, we know – someone install the air con next year!), and the standard of pickleball was phenomenal across all age groups and levels.

We saw intense rallies, emotional victories, and a few very questionable line calls (don’t worry, we forgive you 🤥). The spirit of the sport shone through in every corner of the court.

Heroes On and Off the Court

A huge shout-out goes to our partners Raqt, who ran the tournament scheduling software so smoothly. Agos kept everything ticking on time – which, at a tournament of this size, is practically a superpower.

Speaking of superpowers – two players, both nurses, quite literally leapt into action when a player took a nasty fall and hit his head. No panic, no fuss, just calm, professional care. Thankfully he was absolutely fine (and as a proud Kerry man he was pleased to make it out of Armagh in one piece!). It was another reminder of the community spirit that makes pickleball more than just a game.

The Characters Who Make It All Worthwhile

But at the end of the day, the real stars aren’t the courts, the medals (🫣), or the schedule (though let’s not underestimate the beauty of an on-time final). It’s the people. The laughter between matches, the friendships formed over missed shots and miracle comebacks, the shouts of “Yours!” followed by “Oops – mine apparently.”

Pickleball is nothing without its characters, and this tournament was bursting with them. From the 70+ warriors smashing overheads like 20-year-olds, to the newcomers playing their hearts out – it was a celebration of joy, inclusion, and a shared love of this strange and wonderful sport.

We can’t wait to do it all again next year – maybe with a few more fans and a little less sweat. Until then, keep ballin’, keep smiling, and remember: it’s not just the game, it’s the people who make it magic.
